Relay

Screen mirroring for Tesla

Your screen.
On the car's display.

Mirror your iPhone, iPad or computer onto the Tesla’s own browser. Nothing is installed in the car. Pair once, and it connects on its own after that.

A session on the car display: the code appears here, you enter it on the phone once, and the two connect directly from then on.

Common questions

Do I need to install anything in the car?

No. Tesla does not allow third-party applications, so Relay runs as a page in the car’s own browser. Nothing is installed in the vehicle and nothing on it is changed.

Is this the same as AirPlay or Chromecast?

The result is similar, the route is not. Both of those need a licensed receiver installed on the target device, which cannot be done on a Tesla. Relay uses WebRTC in the browser the car already has.

Does it work with an iPhone?

Sharing the whole screen from Safari needs Safari 27 or newer. On iOS 26 and older the browser cannot capture the screen at all, so the camera or a link pushed to the car are the ways in.

Does the sound go across as well?

Not from an iPhone. iOS does not hand device audio to a web page, so a screen share arrives video only and the sound travels over Bluetooth as usual.

How much delay is there?

Measured in a real car over LTE: 664 × 1440 at 30 fps, a 6 ms round trip and a 26 ms playout buffer, with no packet loss.

Do I have to type the code every time?

No. The car remembers a device it has approved and that device reconnects on its own. A device the display has not seen before waits for approval on the car screen.

Do the phone and the car have to be on the same network?

No. A relay server carries the connection when the car is on LTE and the phone is on another network. On a shared network the two connect directly.

Does it work while the car is moving?

The vehicle’s own software decides what may play while moving. Relay adds no restriction of its own and works around none.
